Potager....A French Kitchen Garden. I have had one for years. Sometimes successful. Sometimes not. In my last home, I was in the middle of a forest. I really didn't get a lot of sunshine for my potager. So I coaxed tomatoes, green beans and lettuce, along with a few herbs into growing. My yield was always small, but to bite into a home grown tomato was worth the effort.
I puchased this book recently. It is called, "In The French Kitchen Garden" by Georgeanne Brennan. It is a wonderful book, filled with information on how to have a true Potager.
It is illustrated by Melissa Sweet, and has the most wonderful water color illustrations throughout the pages, as well as some great recipes.
In France, the garden is used year round. Not just in the summer. Some areas in the far north here in the states can't sustain a year round garden, but if you live in a climate that doesn't drop below freezing for several days in a row, you might acutally be able to have a year round garden.
So for now even though my backyard looks like this...
I am planning and dreaming about a day when I can have a Potager that looks like this....
